Scripts, ideas, and themes are the lifeblood of the media and film industry. Unfortunately, the high-profile nature of the industry also means that it is susceptible to cyber-crime and cyber-attacks. It, therefore, becomes important for anyone in the media and entertainment industry to protect themselves, their clients and their data.

Why the entertainment industry is at risk

Cyber crime affects us all, including the entertainment and media industry, results are leaked, fake news is premised on actual ideas and scripts can be read and stolen before you realise it has even been done. Research shows that more than half of businesses in the media and entertainment industry experienced at least three cyber-attacks in 2018.

There are many reasons for the vulnerability of this industry in particular. This includes the fact that businesses in this industry are generally high profile, but also relates to their use and reliance on external vendors and suppliers which leave their data and applications or websites at risk. This is particularly important for organisations that rely on web-based assets such as ticketing sales and streaming portals for their services and profitability. Hence, the need for WAF software and security. This is where the firewall is positioned at the edge of the network and any traffic to and from web applications is monitored and checked.

Many companies in the industry are over-confident about their chances of being at risk and that their cyber security would keep them safe. However, the increasing dependency on social media, web apps and digital interactions are only making the risks more likely and not less.

How to keep the entertainment industry safe

There are ways in the modern era that all in the industry need to be aware of to keep their information and knowledge safe. Keeping your data, knowledge and ideas as safe as possible should be a priority for everyone in the industry. If there is a single area of potential investment for businesses in the industry, cyber security should be that priority. It not only ensures customer loyalty, but profitability and organisational reputation.

Upskilling your staff

This ensures they understand the risks is an important way to ensure that everyone in the organisation is up to date on the latest threats. While you may well outsource your cyber security, your application security or your IT, this does not mean your staff can afford to be uninformed about the kinds of real threats that they might face regardless of their involvement in website or app management.

Know where your weaknesses are

Make sure to identify where the risks are in your digital and online assets. Conducting a thorough risk assessment is essential to understand what risks are insurmountable, which can be avoided and how to mitigate any risks that your company and clients face. Knowing when you are most likely to be attacked will ensure you are able to bolster your security at those points. Whether this is during the pre-release phase of a major product or data generated from ticket sales, understanding the risks allow you to anticipate and prevent those attacks.

Protecting your online assets

You can do this through constant and consistent monitoring is essential. Whether your business relies on websites, social media accounts, blogs, web apps or other digital online assets, whether you are using cloud-based technology to minimise dealing with hardware and servers, making sure that all your assets are protected is important.

Remote working security

This is a growing concern for many businesses as the world becomes accustomed to the high productivity of working at home. The necessity and possibility of working remotely has been highlighted since the COVID pandemic started and with many businesses encouraging employees to continue working from home, making sure they are working on protected networks is essential. One key tool is to use encrypted systems which makes data unreadable by converting the data into codes. This means you are able to ensure only employees within your business have the encryption key to make the data readable where you are working with sensitive, confidential or highly valuable data.

Create secure backups

These will ensure confidential information and data are not lost or vulnerable to loss. If your employees are confident that their knowledge and data are not vulnerable, they are more likely to focus on their core outputs rather than worrying about cyber-crime and loss of data. This also builds confidence in clients and users that they can share and interact with you, as well as transfer information safely on your website and applications.

With cyber crime expected to cost companies more than $6 trillion in 2021, leaving yourself at risk can cost dearly. Good cyber security, firewall protection and application security provide peace of mind for any business because they ensure that data, information and knowledge are only accessed by those they are intended for.
