To mark the 2016 release of Simon Stone's Australian feature The Daughter, centring on the unearthing of a family secret, the film grants the daughter, (Odessa Young) the pivotal role in the story, in the loosely reworked adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck. Here are 6 other films where the daughter is paramount.

True Grit

TRUE GRIT

Whether it's Henry Hathaway's 1969 film starring John Wayne and Kim Darby, or 2010 Coen brother's remake, starring Hailee Steinfeld, the classic Western about a 14 year old daughter's revenge to hunt and kill the outlaw who murdered her father with the help of a lawman and a Texas ranger is a brilliant role reverse of the convention of Westerns, paving the way for films including Hanna, and Winter's Bone, where the father's paternal and patriarchal role is also subverted.

Winters Bone

Next up is Winter's Bone, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Debrah Granik's 2010 American independent drama, which follows Ree Dolly, a seventeen year old carer to her mentally unstable mother and younger siblings, as she goes on a mission to find her absent father, who has left her family's fate and livelihood in her hands.

Little Miss Sunshine

Next up, is Jon Dayton and Valerie Faris' adorable cult classic Little Miss Sunshine. With an all star cast including Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Alan Arkin and Paul Dano, the film, follows  the dysfunctional Hoover family, where two parents, with the help of a grandfather, uncle and brother, try and make their daughter's wish of competing in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Los Angeles a reality. Hilarious, dark and shocking at times, Little Miss Sunshine is a brilliant film about the great lengths we'll go for family and in this case, the great lengths the Hoover family will go for their daughter Olive. (Abigail Breslin)

Bonjour Tristesse

Adapted from Francois Sagan's 1954 overnight sensation, Otto Preminger's Bonjour Tristesse, starring Jean Segberg, follows 17 year old Cecile, the daughter of a hedonistic, wealthy middle aged man, whose blossoming relationship with the refined and ascetic Anne, brings out the worst in daughter Cecile, leading to devastating results.

Julieta

Next up is Pedro Almodovar's upcoming release Julieta, like Almodovar's 2006 film,  Volver, Julieta, revolves on the complex relationships between mother and daughter, cleverly explored through Julieta's transition from a carefree young woman to a middle aged mother, searching for her missing daughter Antía. Stereotypically bright and bold, Almodovar's latest feature, is a great exploration on the gulf between two generations of women and the often troubled relationship between mother and daughter.

The Virgin Suicides

Last up is Sophia Coppola's 1999 cult classic The Virgin Suicides. Set in 1970s suburban America, the film explores adolescence, death and desire through the eyes of a group of schoolboys, whose obsession with the 5 Lisbon sisters drives the narrative. Known for it's beautiful cinematography, and cult-classic status, The Virgin Suicides, like Julieta , perfectly captures the huge gulf between adolescence and adulthood through presenting the daughters' adolescence as mysterious and impenetrable to their parents and the entire adult world.
